In March 2012 the Road Traffic Orders were published in the local paper. As part of our response, Fair Access to Colchester carried out a survey of people with disabilities and carers in the town. We had around 100 responses to this, and the comments formed our formal objection to the scheme. You can read the full document here.
We were successful, as the Road Traffic Orders received 200 responses, and only 2 of those were in favour of the scheme. This meant the council would have to hold a public inquiry before going ahead with the scheme.
Everything then went quiet, until later on in the year an article appeared in the Colchester Gazette that said a temporary trial would be held.
No one from the council informed us, and eventually it was decided an 18 month trial would be held with the following timetable:
- 17th March 2013 – the ‘experiment’ will commence
- The first six months to mid August 2013 – a Monitoring Group will be formed with representatives from stakeholder groups and ‘tweaks’ carried out.
- Mid August 2013 – mid August 2014 – official 12 month trial in place with a public inquiry to be arranged somewhere towards the end of this time.
Some letters/articles during this time.
So what can we do about it?
